The Indiana Women's History Association Board of Directors Meeting convened at 10:25 a.m. at the Indiana History Center, 450 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.Present: Patricia G. Barnes (President), Beth Van Vorst Gray (Treasurer), Jeannie Regan-Dinius (Secretary), Patricia Gallagher, Mary Anne Butters, Barbara Quigley, Barbara Zimmer, Cara Dafforn, Annette Craycroft, Susanne Buchko, Mona Slaton, Mary Jane Meeker, Sarah Hargitt, Phyllis Matthias, Jill Chambers, Claudia Crump, Carolyn Smith Diener, Marian Towne, Joyce Bowman, Joann Passet, Elizabeth R. Osborn , Kris Schubach, Jo Ann Fox, Jane Fribley.
Absent: Ray Boomhower, Marianne Wokeck (Vice-President), Noraleen Young, Judy Singleton, Jean Bepko, Virginia Dill McCarty, and Cordelia Lewis Burks.
Pat Barnes, President of the Association, called the Indiana Women's History Association Board of Directors meeting to order.
I. Approval of the Minutes as Distributed.
Ms. Regan Dinius requested that the minutes be approved as distributed. Moved by Ms. Van Vorst Gray. Seconded by Ms. Chambers. The motion passed.II. Report of the Treasurer.
Ms. Van Vorst Gray reported that IWHA currently has a balance of $5,604.55. $1,622 was taken in this year for dues and donations. (This includes the $100 reduction spent during course of annual meeting for the memorial to Pam Tranfield.) See Treasurer's Report from 2/28/03 to 4/30/03. Moved by Ms. Chambers to accept the report, and seconded by Ms. Regan-Dinius. The motion passed.III. Old and New Business, 2002/2003.
Ms. Pat Barnes reported no old nor new business with the new fiscal year.IV. President's Report.
Ms. Barnes had nothing new to report.V. Election of Officers for 2003/2004.
Nominations were presented as follows:
- President - Beth Van Vorst Gray
- Vice President - Marianne Wokeck
- Treasurer - Jeannie Regan-Dinius
- Secretary - Sarah Gray Hargitt
Ms. Craycraft moved to accept the nominations, and was seconded by Ms. Chambers. The motion passed.
VI. Remarks by new president.
Ms. Van Vorst Gray thanked the exiting president, Ms. Barnes. 2002 was a stellar year. Ms. Van Vorst Gray would like to structure the group so that the workload is spread out, and to plan far ahead for long term items and events anticipated years ahead. We would like to enhance the infrastructure and set up better communications, such as having a program or press release ready at a moments notice.
I. Old and New Business.
A. Crump/Diener Papers.
Meeting will occur at lunch today to open discussion on use of this collection by IWHA. Issuing a report at September Board Meeting. Several members will review this material today at lunch.B. Wallace State Historic Marker.
Action requested: Approve $200 donation and working with Andrew Stoner, Christian Central Church, on dedication of Zerelda Wallace marker. Ms. Chambers stated the marker would be installed in the Herron Morton district sometime in 2004. A feature was written on Zerelda Wallace, who was the wife of 19th Century Indiana State Governor David Wallace and first president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, in the Summer 1992 issue of Traces. The church's land is being donated for the marker. Ms. Chambers moved that we approve $200 toward the project and Ms. Butters seconded. The motion passed.C. IHS Collaboration.
Publishing a book by Judith Newton on Women in Arts. 2005 will be dedicated as "Women In Arts". Ms. Zimmer volunteered to be the liaison. A report is expected in September.D. Spirit and Place Participation.
This is a city-wide festival of Humanities. Ms. Osborn stated that the theme changes with each year. This year it is "Remembering and Reconciling." There was a question of whether we would like to be involved in the future. It is probably too late for this year. The cost is $250 plus the cost of the programs to participate. Ms. Chambers moved that we support the Sojourner Trial for Spirit and Place, and begin thinking about 2004 and beyond. Ms. Dafforn volunteered to investigate possible areas of IWHA involvement and expense. The motion was deferred.
Spiritandplace.org had this information: Spirit & Place welcomes organizational partners-congregations, arts groups, schools, and civic groups-who are willing to collaborate, produce programs, and make a contribution to the festival. E. Women's History Trail.
Ms. Chambers announced that she would like IWHA to begin working on a Women's History Trail and listed a few places to start. Ms. Chambers, Ms. Regan-Dinius, Ms. Butters, and Ms. Osborn agreed to explore this.F. Newsletter / Brochure.
Ms. Van Vorst Gray said that in lieu of the updated Web page, she will complete the latest newsletter soon. Communications will look at incorporating this into their work as well as producing a brochure that can be set out at functions, including an application for membership to IWHA.G. Request Permission to Appoint Co-Chairs.
The rule that board members must chair a committee will be discussed in September.II. Announcements.
Ms. Van Vorst Gray reported that she had been working with Ms. Tranfield on transitioning records into an archive. Ms. Hargitt and Ms. Quigley will begin working on this project.III. Honors and Awards.
