Moved by Ms. Hargitt to accept the report, and seconded by Ms. Gray. The motion passed.

IV. President's Report.

A. Ms. Gray announced several members have made news recently:

B. The Executive Committee met at the end of July for a brief meeting and discussion of projects. Due to short notice the Executive Committee approved $350 to DL Images for video reproduction of "For The Sport Of It" on August 23. This action will need to be discussed at a future meeting with more members present.

V. Project Reports.

A. "For The Sport Of It" - Title IX - September 17, 2003
Ms. Barnes reported that the video premiere will be at 6 p.m. on September 17, 2003 at the NCAA Corporate Conference Center, 700 W. Washington Street, Indianapolis. The NCAA has spent approximately $8,000 and IWHA has spent approximately $2,000. The NCAA has asked to be co-producers so they can show the video at the Hall of Champions and other events commemorating Title IX. WFYI also expressed interest in the video and wants to air it. There is room for 240 people at the premiere, and RSVPs are requested. Ms. Barnes has sent out personal email invites to several people. Stephanie White will be the moderator. Ms. Barnes moved to accept the NCAA as co-producers. Seconded by Ms. Regan-Dinius. The motion passed.

Ms. Gray briefly reported on the following committees on behalf of the chairpersons.

B. Publications.
Committee has been meeting and an editorial board chosen.

C. Petticoats to Politics - October 11, 2003
A flyer and brochure are ready for distribution to publicize the Petticoats to Politics event to be held October 11, 2003 in Richmond, Indiana.

D. Crump/Diener Papers. Discussion was held on the Crump/Diener Papers. Mss. Crump and Diener are both IWHA members and have collaborated on a project gathering biographical information on approximately 300 notable historical and contemporary women. IWHA is working on how best to get this important collection to students and others. Two new IWHA members - Bill Gulde and Sue Gulde have volunteered to serve on the Crump/Diener committee.

E. Webpage / Webmaster. Ms Van Vorst Gray announced that we hired a Graduate Assistant - Mary Schons of Gary, Indiana - to be the new webmaster. She is going to put some of Crump/Diener Paper information on our website: http://iwh.iupui.edu/. Due to the generous donation of $1000 by Ms. Zimmer, we were able to act quickly. Ms. Schons is not taking a full load so the expenses are not as great as expected; however, we would like to compensate her adequately for her work.

Ms. Zimmer challenged the board as a whole to match her donation. Ms. Dafforn suggested we request a grant from the Humanities Council or other organizations to pay for the balance of the graduate assistantship. We could also name this award - such as the "IWHA Fellowship Award".

Ms. Barnes suggested we set up an editorial board to review information posted on the web.

F. Women's History Trail.
Ms. Regan-Dinius stated that the group has been holding meetings. They will begin with places related to the 300 women in the Crump/Diener Papers project. There will be a more comprehensive report available at the November 13 Board Meeting.

G. National History Day in Indiana – April 2004.
Nothing to report. This event is usually held the last Saturday in April each year.

H. IAH Joint Meeting, March 2004.
Nothing to report.

I. IHS Women's Month Collaboration.
Nothing to report.

VI. Committee Reports

A. Membership.
Ms. Regan-Dinius has agreed to chair this committee. There will be a brochure ready for review in the near future.

B. Nominations.
Ms. Craycraft tabled the nomination of Kris Schubach to the board. We will bring this up at the next meeting when more members are present.

C. Finance and Development.
Ms. Dafforn reviewed grants and there was discussion on best practices. Ms. Dafforn provided a short list of Foundations and individuals IWHA may like to contact for gifts and funds. Next meeting she will provide a sample Letter of Introduction, and Guidelines. We may wish to run all requests through a "Grant Committee" so that there are no duplications of effort and that we are asking for the right amount - not too much or too little.

VII. Old and New Business.

A. "Spirit and Place: Reconciling and Remembering" - November 2003.
Ms. Dafforn investigated possible areas of IWHA involvement and expense. She provided a listing of 3 programs that IWHA may be interested in supporting at the $250 level:

  1. Living Testimonies, by Freetown Village
  2. First Ladies' Lives, by President Benjamin Harrison Home
  3. Reconciling Truth, by Ind. Historical Bureau & Indpls-Marion Library

Ms. Barnes asked for what, exactly, is the money going to be used. We will be paying to get into the program listing of events and perhaps funding expenses to bring in a speaker. The deadline is next week so we must rush - Ms. Dafforn agreed to do more research and get back with the board.

B. Reader's Theater - October 13, 2003
Ms. Towne informed the board of a reading of "The Onliest One Alive", the first- person story of Indianapolis native Hyacinth Thrash, on Monday, October 13 at the Southport Baptist Church. Thrash was the only survivor of the Jonestown mass suicide. Marsha Grant wrote the script based on Towne's book of the same name, and will produce it. Grant also wrote and directed the performance of "Saint Susan," at Epilogue Theater.

C. Indiana Historical Society - 2003 Accessions Pertaining to Women's History
See attachment. Ms. Barbara Quigley provided the board with a listing of new acquisitions - most have not been processed and are not available yet. Materials include B'nai B'rith Women scrapbooks and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing records.

Hearing no other business, the meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
