Nominate a Notable Woman for the Indiana Women's History Trail!
The Indiana Women's History Trail is a collaborative project of the Indiana Women's History Association, the Indiana Commission for Women, the Division of Historic Preservation & Archeology, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Indiana Historical Bureau and Indiana State Library. It is hoped that each of Indiana's 92 counties will be represented in the nominations of notable Indiana women at www.in.gov/history. Go to the web site to nominate your favorite Hoosier heroines.
My Favorite Historic Place Photo Contest Guidelines:
Images become the property of the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. Photographs will be judged by a panel consisting of representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and other preservationists. Submissions will be judged in 2 categories-12 and under and age 13 and above. Winning photos will be displayed in the State House Rotunda during May. Prizes may include a complimentary registration to Indiana's annual preservation conference (Oct. 20-22, 2005 in Lafayette), gift certificates to regional restaurants in historic districts, a 1-year membership to the Indiana State Museum and state fair tickets. Winning images will be printed in Preserving Indiana (the DHPA's newsletter) and other submittals will be placed on the Division's website.

On Wednesday, April 6th, the National Park Service's Network to Freedom Program's staff will be meeting in Indianapolis next week. In honor of their visit, and to celebrate the work being done at the Levi and Catharine Coffin house, there will be an evening reception.
The reception will start at 7:00 pm at the Levi and Catharine Coffin House located at 113 U.S. 27 North Fountain City, IN 47341. Light refreshments will be served.

The Indiana Women's History Association will be meeting Thursday, March 10 at 5:30 PM in Room W202A, 2nd floor, west side of the Indiana Historical Society. Author/Editor of Traces magazine Ray Boomhower will be speaking on May Wright Sewall at 5:45 PM. Sewall, an Indianapolis Suffragist whose tenure at the national level with Susan B. Anthony, led her onto the international stage working for women and peace around the world. Ray's book But I Do Clamor May Wright Sewall A Life 1844-1920 will the basis for his talk. If you own the book, bring it for Ray to sign. Following the talk and discussion, there will be a short business meeting. The nominating committee is collecting names for prospective seats for the June election. The Indiana Women's History Trail was announced in a news release February 24 and a nomination for historic woman, site or event is now available for downloading at www.in.gov/history.

On Thursday, April 29, 2004, the United States District Court will host "A Celebration of Women's History", to recognize the many contributions that women have made to the law, the courts and the legal community in Indiana. The featured speaker will be the Hon. Betty Barteau, retired judge of the Indiana Court of Appeals and most recently head of the Russian-American Judicial Partnership. This event is sponsored by the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the Women and Law Division of the Indianapolis Bar Association, and the Indiana Women's History Association. It will take place at 2 p.m., in Room 216 of the United States Court House, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Judge Barteau served on the Indiana Court of Appeals from 1991 until 1998 and for fifteen years prior on the Marion Superior Court. She graduated from Indiana University Indianapolis Law School, and holds an LL.M. from the University of Virginia. Since retiring from the appellate bench, Judge Barteau has headed the Russian- American Judicial Partnership, a USAID-sponsored project implementing programs to improve the performance, reputation and skills of the Russian judiciary. Judge Barteau has authored Thirty Years of the Journey of Indiana's Women Judges, 1964-1994, which was published in the Indiana Law Review in 1997.
